Ee adutha kalathu-Brilliant execution

Looks like Malayalam new 'trend' is multiple story lines with connections each other.Ee adutha kalathu has multiple story lines connected each other in some manner(not as convincing as 'Traffic'. The makers(using Jagathi's voice) specifies that the story happens in 1500 years old Thiruvananthapuram. We have an young man Vishnu.Vishnu is many things rolled into one. He is a rag-picker, an errand runner, a contract pinch hitter for amateur cricket clubs, a doting father, and an obedient husband. But above all he is a family man at heart. Ramani, his fiery better half, considers him an incorrigible bum, and maybe rightly so. He has an ailing mother and two adorable daughters. As you can expect, they live in fear, in a world infested by loan sharks.

Madhuri was a starlet in her late teens growing up in Mumbai, having dabbled briefly in a couple of Bollywood duds. She is now a home maker and a mother of an eleven-year-old boy, Ayur (a cricket crazy kid, a Rubik's cube addict). But yet, years have been easy on her and she remains a head turner.  Madhuri is married to Ajay Kurien, the street smart CEO of an up market hospital in the city. He is a self made man, who climbed the ladder years ago in corporate Mumbai, as he proudly likes to recall, without trying to learn a single word of Hindi. There is a serial killer out on the prowl in the city.

These three,Vishnu,Madhuri,Ajay Kurien are the main(?) characters. There are some other wandering characters like Rustam (a North Indian bloke on some short term contract in the city),Tom Cherian(the City Commissioner of Police),Roopa(an investigative journelist).

Though I felt there is nothing, the movie never bored me.So I should say, a good script. But same cannot be said about the direction.Sometimes I felt  a lack of genuineness or realism in some scenes.Or are the actors simply over acting?.But there are some genuine comedy.Cinematography and editing was good. For the song 'department', I really don't remember the lines and tune of the two songs they showed.

This is a movie which has rich 'tooooo' sound.Yes , I mean you can here so many 'toooo' beap sound in between many dialogs.Yep,there were trying to make it maximum realistic!. If you have watched the recent Malayalam films, you must be knowing that this is not a new idea!

Among the actors,Indrajith as Vishnu, has done a very good job. With his never exaggerated Thiruvananthapuram slang dialogs, in my openion he steals the show!. Tanushri Ghosh, as Madhuri was also impressive.Murali Gopy, as Ajay Kurien was natural in most of the time ,but there were scenes.where he showed what is this 'old fashioned' psychic type acting.

Anoop Menon,as  Tom Cherian  has nothing much for a performance. But it was a surprise ,something like I've seen in the movie 'Mars attack'. Lena ,as Rupa disappointed. Here acting as a 'investigative journalist' was not convincing, at least for me,especially in the 'live reporting' scenes. As most of the actors in the movie, she dubbed herself, and same for the dubbing also. Not fit.I just don't know why most of the Malayalam movies have their 'feminist','bold' female characters having a bob haircut.A  pity wig.No idea!

Nishan, tried something different. He dubbed for the film! His broken Malayalam saves him from further acting attempts as a bad guy.Convincing.

Among other characters, Mythili, as Ramani was OK. Jagathi Sreekumar, as usual, impressive. Baiju as a gangster , has the credit for using too many 'tooooo' beeps in the dialogs. He is a gangster, remember!!.After all, all the supporting characters should perform well, remember it's a Malayalam film.

Though it earned some minus points, the movie 'Ee adutha kalathu' is worth watching( with more plus points) as the makers really tried something which was not common in Malayalam.

Thalsamayam Truman Show

I have written a post abut the English title trend in Malayalam films released in 2011.This trend seems to continue in 2012 also.Starting with 'Second show',list includes Ordinary,Bachelor Party and many more. There is a Malayalam movie is going to be hit the screens this year, with a beautiful Malayalam title-"Thalsamayam Oru Penkutty".(with my limited knowledge in English,I would translate this as 'A Girl on Live')!.Here is the trailer

It's a movie about the 'reality' television shows .Sounds interesting. That one line plot reminds me about another movie" The Truman Show"

Truman Burbank has lived his entire life, since before birth, in front of cameras for The Truman Show, although he is unaware of this fact. Truman's life is filmed through thousands of hidden cameras, 24 hours a day and broadcast live around the world, allowing executive producer Christof to capture Truman's real emotion and human behavior when put in certain situations. Truman's hometown of Seahaven is a complete set built under a giant arcological dome, populated by the show's actors and crew, allowing Christof to control every aspect of Truman's life, even the weather. To prevent Truman from discovering his false reality, Christof has invented means of dissuading his sense of exploration, including "killing" his father in a storm while on a fishing trip to instill in him a fear of the water, and making many news reports and 'adverts' about the dangers of travelling, and featuring television shows about how good it is to stay at home. However, despite Christof's control, Truman has managed to behave in unexpected manners, in particular falling in love with an extra, Sylvia or known to Truman as Lauren, instead of Meryl, the character intended to be his wife. Though Sylvia is removed from the set quickly, her memory still resonates with him, and he 'secretly' thinks of her outside of his marriage to Meryl. Sylvia is part of a "Free Truman" campaign that fights to have Truman freed from the show.(from wikipedia page).

What attracted me more is the climax of the film, where Truman escapes to the real world.I've seen Jim Carrey in some other films like Bruce Almighty and i liked it a lot.But this is truly a classic.

Valayam(Dir:Sibi Malayil)

Valayam

Cast: Murali,Manoj K Jayan,Parvathy,Suvarna,Mamukkoya

Script: Lohithadas
Direction: Sibi Malayil

Valayam (for this film,it means 'the steering') is 1992 Malayalam film with Murali as the main character. There is no 'great' story involved here. The film deals with the life of a lorry driver,Sekharan(Murali). It's like reading a simple novel that has sets in a Kerala village. You can see a well done characterization here, may be because of Lohithadas. Manoj K Jayan plays another important role and he did a very good job.Though the film doesn't offer a challenging role to an actor like Murali, he maintained the character so down to earth. All characters are human beings here. All the girls in the movie donot 'love' the hero/main character,Sekharan. All the characters,be it Sekharan's assistant(Mamukkoya), or the teashop owner 'Amman' and his wife,'Ammayi',the prostitute character(Bindu Panicker) have his/her own existance.

Murali had no burden of stardom. So his transformation to driver Sekharan is convincing.Manoj K jayan played the Villain/anti hero character. But it is character just like others. He has some weakness as well as some ambitions. Some times his actions seemed as a bit dramatic. But,what i liked most in this film is the presence of Lohithadas  in front of the camera. It's like he is seeing the pain or life of his characters. This film won't give you a 'message'(ofcaurse, the villain gets the punishment in the climax). .

If you like to watch a typical Malayalam cinema having some convincing down to earth human characters, some good songs and a 'bit' overdone background score , this is for you. Basically i don't mind the songs in a movie,so i didn't go to that aspect. Here "chembaka mettile " is a nice one.

 Ultimate thought : It's like a novel..
